Russian Ballet Orlando Presents Esmeralda

August 23rd, 2021 (ORLANDO, FL) - Russian Ballet is thrilled to present a full-length production of Esmeralda, a ballet that is rarely seen in its entirety in the United States; most western ballet companies only perform two Esmeralda-related pieces. Performed by the professional and pre-professional dancers of Russian Ballet, audiences of all ages will marvel at this thrilling and stunning classical ballet.

Based on the novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo, Esmeralda is the story of a beautiful gypsy girl who marries the poet Pierre Gringoire to save him from a certain death. Esmeralda makes it clear that it is a marriage of convenience only, for although she is sought after by three suitors, Esmeralda loves only one. A story of love, infatuation, and betrayal come together to form this stunning ballet.

Esmeralda was originally choreographed by Jules Perrot, and performed for the Ballet of Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, in 1844. It was a huge success, and since has seen revivals by Marius Petipa for the Mariinsky Ballet in 1886, Agrippina Vaganova for the Kirov Ballet in 1935, and a recent revival in 2009 for the Bolshoi Ballet.

“I am thrilled to offer Russian Ballet’s Esmeralda,” says Katerina Fedotova, Artistic Director. “I staged this full-length production into two acts, to provide a unique opportunity for our audiences to see the entire story. Russian Ballet is one of only two ballet companies in the United States to perform a full-length version of this classical ballet. Our professional dancers and pre-professionals will enchant our audiences from the moment the music begins.”

Esmeralda will receive two performances, underwritten in part by the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs. On Saturday, October 16th, there will be two performances at Polk Theatre in Lakeland, FL.
